Setting of the Song: Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) is a son of a rich industrialist. After his father's death, he has trouble managing his father's business. His love life is also in trouble. Feeling hopeless and suicidal, he aimlessly boards a train where he meets Geet (Kareena Kapoor), a spirited Punjabi girl. Geet misses her train because of Aditya. She becomes furious and compels Aditya to escort her safely to her home in Punjab. On the way, they get to know each other and become friendly. Aditya tells Geet about his life and family. At Geet's house, Aditya tells Geet's relatives that he is a musician because he wants to hide his real identity. In a gathering at Geet's house, Aditya is asked to sing a song. Music composer Pritam, whose full name is Pritam Chakraborty, is actually a Bengali, who was born and raised in Bengal. It just shows that music does not recognize any boundaries.
What does Nagada Nagada mean? The word nagada means drum in Hindi language, and Nagada Nagada Baja means the drum sounds. The song shows gigantic drums being played, which go along well with Nagada Nagada words.
Nagada Nagada not the only choice: Music composer Pritam recalled that during the early stages of making of this song, various other choices were considered, such as Damama Damama and Pataka Pataka. They eventually settled on Nagada Nagada. The music composer was not very happy with this song and gave several other options to the director. However, director Imtiaz Ali decided to choose this song, which later became a very popular song.
