  • Setting of Masakali SongRoshan (Abhishek Bachchan), an Indian American, accompanies his grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) from the United States to India because the grandmother wants to spend her last remaining days in her ancestral home in Delhi. Roshan learns about life in Delhi and tries to become a part of it.  The song shows him watching daily activities of people, such as people shopping, children playing in the streets and people going to work.  He is particularly fascinated by Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) and watches her going through her daily activities.

  • About Delhi-6 movie:  The title of the movie, Delhi-6, comes from the postal code for a neighborhood in an old part of Delhi, where streets are old, narrow and crowded. The movie centers around Roshan, an Indian American, who has grown up in America and is unfamiliar with India.  Roshan learns about many fascinating aspects of Indian culture, people and music.  He also finds out about some of the negative sides of this society. He eventually gets pulled into the communal conflicts that are tearing the neighborhood apart and pays a heavy price. The depiction of places, people and old Delhi neighborhoods has been done well in the film and seems genuine. Click here for another delightful song, Sasural Genda Phool, from this movie. • Masakali Song Meaning   The word Masakali does not have any specific meaning.  In the movie, Masakali is the name of a pet dove that is shown dancing on actress Sonam Kapoor's head. She stated that during the filming of the movie, the bird had become very friendly with her and would often hop on to her head.

  • Masakali Song Music Composer   This popular song was composed by the Oscar winner musician Rahman. This lively song is one of the most popular songs from the movie but some others are also good.  Rahman is a creative artist. In another song from Delhi-6 movie, he showed his creativity by modifying a traditional folk song, Sasural Genda Phool, and changed the mood and beat of the song dramatically. Rahman is also a talented singer.  Click here for one of his well known songs, Dil Se Re, from the movie Dil Se.

  • Lyrics of Masakali Song:  Lyrics of this popular song were written by Prasoon Joshi. The words of the song tell the Masakali bird to fly away and fulfill her ambitions. Additional words tell the bird to fly without fear and to do whatever she wants to do. In this song, there is a clear reference to the young girl Bittu (Sonam Kapoor), who lives in a traditional family in old Delhi and yearns to have more freedom. Later in the movie, Bittu tells Roshan that Masakali cannot fly because Masakali is her father's favorite bird and her wings have been tied. This statement also points to the lack of freedom faced by the bird and the young girl.
